Buying A Baby Ear Thermometer

Monitoring your baby's body temperature during illness is very important.  For starters it enables you to monitor the progress of the illness.  However, more important it enables you to watch out for significant increases in body temperature which can put their health at risk.  Although very rare, sometimes body temperature rises so high that it can be very dangerous potentially leading to fitting, coma or even death.

There are many methods for monitoring your baby's body temperature.  The most common is probably the rectal route, although this seems a little unkind as many babies find this to be painful.  In fact some will actively resist.  This seems a little cruel bearing in mind that they are already feeling unwell.  It is also a very cumbersome process and it takes time for the thermometer bulb to rise to body temperature meaning that it can be several minutes before you get an accurate reading of body temperature.

The baby ear thermometer is a great solution.  Firstly the method causes very little discomfort.  The process just involves inserting a very small sensor into the ear which your baby will barely even notice.  Some will even warm the sensor up to body temperature.  The reading is also obtained very quickly (almost instantaneously in fact) due to the fact that they do not rely on conduction, but monitor a form of electromagnetic radiation called infra-red.  Via quantifying this the device is able to convert the measurement into a visual indication of temperature.  The ear canal is an excellent site within the body to measure body temperature. The temperature does not fluctuate (like the mouth for instance which can change in temperature after a hot or a cold drink) and it gives an almost real time indication of body temperature (the ear drum shares a blood supply with the section of the brain that controls body temperature).

The baby ear thermometer is very easy to use.  It simply involves placing the device into the ear and pushing a button.  Some will tell you when the device is in the correct position within the ear canal.  Others will provide feedback to confirm that an accurate and reliable reading has been taken.  Some devices will also store the previous readings to monitor changes with time.

Although intended for babies the baby ear thermometer can also be used on older children, adults and the elderly.  For adults it is possible to use the device with no supervision.

In conclusion the baby ear thermometer represents a fantastic solution to an age old problem,  They are quick, reliable, easy to use and accurate.  They are also suitable for use on the whole family including adults.  A very worthy investment for all families with a baby.
